Glossary of Terms – What Is CD?

CD (the abbreviation of Compact Disc) is a digital optical disc data storage format. The standard CDs can hold up to about 80 minutes of uncompressed audio or about 700 MB of data. The Mini CD has various diameters ranging from 60 to 80 millimeters (2.4 to 3.1 in).

Physical Details

Basic specifications of CD: (according to the Audio-CD Standard Red Book which is published in September, 1983):

Scanning speed: 1.2-1.4 m/s; Constant Linear Velocity / CLV – about equal to 500 revolutions per minute of the inner ring, 200 revolutions per minute of the outer ring.

Track pitch: 1.65 microns

Diameter: 120 mm

Diameter of disc: 1.2 mm

Inner radius area: 24 mm

Outer radius area: 358 mm

Read and write speed: 1X = 150 KiB / s = 153,600 Bytes / s

Capacity: 700MB

Audio-CD:

Audio-CD includes one or more stereo tracks, 16bit PCM encoding, and a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz. The standard CD has a diameter of 120 mm which can store approximately 80 minutes of audio. Besides, an 80mm laser disc, which is sometimes used to issue CD singles, can store about 20 minutes of sound data.

Music CD does not have error correction capability.
