Is Microsoft Surface 4 Worth to Buy
The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 appears to be a Surface Laptop 3 with upgraded processors. There are a few differences: the Laptop 4 is slightly smaller, and a new “Ice Blue” color option is available. However, the 3:2 touchscreen, port range, and architecture are all the same.
The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4’s 15-inch version (starting at $1,299; $1,499 as tested) provides one of the most refined computing experiences of any Windows laptop. It’s a standout big-screen notebook with two color choices and outstanding build quality. New processor options from AMD and Intel for 2021 improve the performance of this fourth-generation laptop.
The Surface Laptop 4 has won an Editors’ Choice award as the best premium 15-inch laptop. On a large computer, it’s suitable for general-purpose computing.
The Surface Laptop 4 comes in two different screen sizes. A smaller 13-inch model, which starts at $999 and is also updated for 2021 with new AMD and Intel processors, complements the 15-inch model reviewed here.
The 13-inch model comes standard with an AMD Ryzen 5 4680U mobile processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. Upgrades to the Intel Core i5-1135G7 or Core i7-1185G7 CPU, as well as RAM and storage, are available (up to 32GB of memory, and up to 1TB of solid-state storage).
The 15-inch model, meanwhile, starts at $1,299 and comes with a Ryzen 7 4980U processor, 8GB of memory, and a 256GB SSD. For an extra $200, our review unit comes with a larger 512GB SSD. A Core i7 version is also available, but neither platform offers the option of a discrete GPU. Both models of the latest laptop have integrated Intel Iris Xe or AMD Radeon graphics.
Color Options:
The 3:2 screen orientation, a signature Surface feature that adds room for displaying more of a vertical document like a web page at the cost of horizontal space for watching a video, is the most notable design element. Laptops are increasingly abandoning 16:9 or 16:10 widescreen displays in favour of this once-common screen ratio.
The Surface Laptop 4 gets high marks for slimming down, but it’s far from the smallest or lightest laptop with a large screen. The LG Gram 17 has a larger screen than the Surface Laptop 4 and weighs less than 3 pounds, which is a more remarkable feat.
The 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 is only available in grey or black, missing the Sandstone and Ice Blue finishes found on the 13-inch edition, but any colour is welcome in this group. The XPS 15 also comes in a variety of colours, while the MacBook Pro and the majority of competitors do not.
