Yesterday, Toshiba Memory Europe GmbH announced two new series of NVMe PCIe 3.0 Gen3x4 M.2 solid state drives (SSDs), the RD500 and RC500 Series. The two SSDs are configured with the company's own state-of-the-art 96-layer TLC (triple-level cell) BiCS FLASH 3D memory.
Toshiba Memory Europe GmbH has announced two new gaming-grade M.2 NVMe SSDs – RD500 SSD and RC500 SSDs which focus heavily on providing better game experience for gamers.

The two SSDs with high-performance tailored for high-end gaming rigs, PC manufactures and people looking for upgrades of their existing systems. The Toshiba RD500 SSD is available in three capacities: 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB while the RC500 comes in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB.
Paul Rowan, VP Toshiba Memory Europe GmbH, gave a brief introduction to these two Toshiba SSDs “With the introduction of the new NVMe / PCIe SSD, RD500 and RC500 series, we have created a dedicated range for gaming enthusiasts and conventional players. This will allow them to improve the speed and performance of their systems to have a better gaming experience”
For the benefit of the game, the advantage of these new SSDs from Toshiba is their versatility. The compact M.2 2280 form factor (22 × 80 mm) makes it enable to be compatible with both laptops and desktops. They also have next-generation PCIe interfaces, which cost shorter time to store data compared to the SSDs with SATA ports.
With SLC cache onboard, the Toshiba RC500 and RD500 NVMe PCIe 3.0 Gen3x4 M.2 SSDs boast the 96-layer TLC (triple-level cell) BiCS FLASH 3D memory technology. In addition, they also support NVMe 1.3c interface specifications.
Even though the exact controllers used didn’t announce by the firm, but we know one of them has a four-channel controller while the other comes with an eight-channel controller, and this explains why they are different in speeds.
About RD500 SSD
The RD500 SSD is equipped with an eight-channel controller which fully stimulates the potential of BiCS FLASH technology. Its sequential read speed is up to 3,400 MB/s and write speed can reach 3,200 MB/s. The Input/output operations per second (IOPS) random read speed for the RD500 SSD is up to 685,000 while for random write, it can hit a maximum of 625,000.
About RC500 SSD
On the other hand, the RC500 SSD is configured with a four-channel controller. It has a sequential reading speed of up to 1,700MB/s and sequential write speed up to 1,600MB/s. As for IOPS, the RD500 realizes up to 355,000 for random read and 410,000 random write speed.
Their performances are shown in the following table:
Bottom Line
The Toshiba RD500 SSD and RC500 SSD will hit the market in the 4th Quarter of 2019 and under the brand name Toshiba. This is different from the predecessor, the RD400 Series which came under a subsidiary of Toshiba – OCZ. The firm verifies last month that its flash memory business would be renaming to Kioxia from October 1.
Unfortunately, Toshiba hasn’t announced the price of the two products yet. So you have to wait until launch day to find out whether these drives will set you back or not. But the RD500 SSD will come with a five years warranty and the RC500 SSD will have a three years warranty.
I hope this article will give you a general learning of RD500 SSD and RC500 SSD which can help you choose a suitable one.
