Why There Is No Sound on PS5?
PS5, short for PlayStation 5, is a popular home video game console provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is the successor to the PS4 (PlayStation 4) and is quite popular among game lovers. Compared with PS4, PS5 is improved a lot in performance, which makes a lot of PS4 users choose to upgrade to PS5.
It does bring wonderful gaming experiences. Unfortunately, problems could also happen on it. Since PS5 was first released on November 12, 2020, a lot of users have encountered different issues while playing the console, such as PS5 crashing, PS5 not turning on/off, various error codes, etc.
Recently, the PS5 no sound issue is common to see. Users who encounter the problem cannot hear any sound while playing the console, which affects their gaming experiences greatly.
Why does PS5 no sound happen? The culprit could vary from case to case. The many reasons for the problem are listed below:
- Problem with the HDMI port or cable.
- Improper HDMI Mode on TV.
- Problem with the 3D audio feature on PS5.
- Issues related to a previous system software update.
Here are some possible fixes to troubleshoot the PS5 no sound issue. If you are not sure which problem you are facing, you can try the following fixes one by one until your PS5 sound works properly.
Fix 1: Make Sure the TV Is on the Correct Output
If you accidentally mute your TV, you won’t hear anything while playing the PS5. Therefore, before you perform advanced operations, please check whether your TV is mute. If it is, unmute your TV. You should also unmute your PS5 console.
If you unmute your TV and PS5 but there is still no sound on PS5, you need to move on to the next fix.
Fix 2: Check Your HDMI Port and Cable
Usually, a PS5 console can be connected to a TV via an HDMI cable. Sometimes the PS5 no sound issue can be caused by a problematic HDMI port or cable.
To figure out whether the problem happens because of your HDMI port, you can try to connect to a different HDMI port. PS5 consoles can work with any HDMI, but to improve the performance, it is recommended to use HDMI 2.1. However, if your TV doesn’t support HDMI 2.1, you should use an HDMI 1.4 port.
And to check the HDMI cable, you can use the cable on different devices or try a different HDMI cable.
If your HDMI port and cable work without any problems, you can continue with the next solution.
Fix 3: Use Standard HDMI Mode
Some users reported that they only encountered PS5 sound issues when they use the Enhanced HDMI mode on the TV. And they solved the problem after changing the HDMI mode to Standard. Therefore, you can also have a try.
Fix 4: Disable 3D Audio Mode on PS5
The 3D audio mode could also lead to a no sound PS5. According to Sony, PS5 3D audio is currently supported on headsets only. Besides, some PS5 games don’t support this feature, either. If you have enabled this feature, there might be no sound on PS5.
So, to solve the problem, you should disable the 3D audio mode. And you just need to go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and turn off the Enable 3D Audio feature.
By the way, if your headphone is connected with the DualSense, you can’t hear anything from your PS5 speakers. Please unplug your headphone or un-pair your wireless headphone so you can switch the audio to your TV.
Fix 5: Change Your Sound Settings on PS5
To fix the PS5 on sound issue, you should also check your sound settings and set the default audio output device to your TV or speaker.
And you can go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output, select your TV or speaker, and then press X to change it.
In addition, using the Dolby Sound system might also help. It is available in the Sound settings. And you just need to select AUDIO Format (Priority) and set Dolby Digital as the priority audio format. Remember to press X to save the changed settings.
If the issue still exists, please keep trying the next fix.
Fix 6: Install the Latest PS5 System Software Update
The PS5 no sound issue could also happen due to a problematic previous system update. If the PS5 no sound issue appears since you update the system software, it indicates that your update might be installed improperly or contains corrupted software.
In this case, you need to reinstall your system software update. If there is any PS5 update recently, please install the latest one, because new updates usually come with bug fixes, new features, or improvements.
Here are two methods to update PS5 system software and you can choose one from them:
- Method 1: Update PS5 via Settings
- Method 2: Update PS5 via a USB flash drive
Now, let’s see more details.
Method 1: Update PS5 via Settings
The first method is quite easy to operate, and you just need to:
Step 1: Make sure the network that your PS5 is connected to works properly.
Step 2: Select Settings when you are on the home screen of your PS5.

Please wait until the PS5 system software update is installed on your console successfully. After that, you can check whether the PS5 no sound issue disappears.
Method 2: Update PS5 with a USB Flash Drive
If you don’t receive any system software update in Settings, you can install the latest update with a USB flash drive that has been formatted to FAT32.
FAT32 is a file system that can be recognized by the PS5 console. It has better compatibility compared with other system files such as NTFS. Therefore, if your USB flash drive is not FAT32, you need to format it before updating your PS5 with the USB drive.
After formatting the USB flash drive to FAT32, you can use it to download the latest PS5 update file on a PC, and then install the update file on your PS5 console.
