VBScript Will Be Disabled in Windows 7/8
The plan to eradicate VBScript from the web is moved ahead by Microsoft. The company will disable VBScript in Windows 7/8 by default on Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) in the next Patch Tuesday update on August 13, 2019.
The move will be achieved through the cumulative update of Windows 7/8/8.1 in the next Patch Tuesday update, which cuts off a preferred target of attackers like DarkHotel – a hacking group in North Korean.
Microsoft recently thought that VBScript is completely useless like ActiveX because the default setting on the web today is JavaScript and all major browsers support JavaScript. This is a reason that it will disable VBScript in Windows 7/8.
In 2017, Microsoft devalued VBScript in IE11. This move is a part of a long-term effort, helping free its browser from the traditional scripting engine. Maybe this is another reason that VBScript will be disabled in Windows 7/8.
Microsoft Edge does not support VBScript and has been limited to the specific document mode in IE11 since then, while Windows 10 is able to prevent VBScript code from running in all scenarios.
In July, Microsoft has already disabled VBScript for IE11 by default on Windows 10, and in the next update on August 13, Windows 7/8/8.1 will enter the same state in IE11.
However, if admins need it, they can choose to enable or disable VBScript execution in IE11 by security zones to support business applications, which can be done with Group Policy or Registry.
As Microsoft watcher Paul Thurrott explained that when Microsoft turned to .NET in the 2000s and Visual Basic. NET was used for client-side and server-side development, it stopped focusing on VBScript.
For hackers, VBScript is a fruitful tool that can be the language used by them who used BlackPOS malware in early 2010 to get 100 million credit card details from Target customers.
In 2000, hackers used VBScript to create I Love You worm. It was delivered as a.txt.vbs attachment did a good job since Windows hid the attachments’ extension name at the time. Your Windows PCs would send more I Love You emails to your contact list after you opened the attachment.
